New: Frames, Transparent Backgrounds, and a Redesigned Editor
Published March 9, 2026 ยท By the QR Code Banana Team
Your QR codes just got a lot more interesting. We shipped a batch of features that give you more control over how your codes look โ without adding complexity. Here is what changed and why it matters.
Frame Templates That Make Your QR Code Print-Ready
Plain QR codes work fine on a screen. But stick one on a flyer, a table tent, or a product label and it just sits there. No context, no instruction, nothing telling people what to do.
That is why we added 8 frame templates you can apply with one click:
- Simple Border and Rounded Border for clean, professional framing
- Banner Top and Banner Bottom for bold call-to-action strips
- Badge / Ribbon for a centered label across the bottom
- Speech Bubble for a playful, conversational look
- Phone Outline for app-store or download prompts
- Table Tent for restaurant menus and point-of-sale displays
Every frame includes a call-to-action text field that defaults to "Scan me!" โ so your QR code is never just a mysterious square. Type your own message ("Order here", "Get 20% off", "Join our WiFi") or leave the default. Either way, people know what to do.
You can also set a frame color to match your brand, and the frame scales properly in every export format.
Transparent Backgrounds That Actually Work
We added transparent background support. Check the "Transparent" box under Background, and the QR code exports with no background fill โ ready to drop onto any colored surface, photo, or design.
To help you preview how it looks, we added a background toggle in the preview panel. Switch between white and black backgrounds to make sure your QR code stays readable on both light and dark surfaces before you export.
The transparency carries through to SVG and PNG exports. JPG does not support transparency, so we automatically composite onto a white background for that format.
A Cleaner, Faster Editor
The settings panel used to have 6 collapsible sections. We consolidated them into 4 focused panels:
- Frame โ Pick a template, write your CTA, set the frame color
- Design โ Choose your dot style, set foreground and background colors, customize finder patterns
- Logo โ Upload an image, adjust size and shape
- Advanced โ Error correction level and margin controls
Everything you need is still there. It is just organized the way you actually use it: pick a frame first (since it changes the overall layout), then dial in the visual style.
Smart Color Linking
Here is a small detail that saves a lot of clicking. When you change your foreground color, the finder pattern border and center colors now automatically follow. Set your QR code to red, and the finder patterns turn red too.
Want the finder patterns to be a different color? Just pick a color for them manually. Once you override, that color stays independent. No toggles, no settings โ it just works the way you would expect.
Color Contrast Checker
We added a simplified WCAG contrast checker to the preview panel. It shows the contrast ratio between your foreground and background colors and flags whether it passes accessibility standards.
If the ratio drops too low, you will see a warning before you export โ so you never accidentally create a QR code that scanners struggle to read.
